Thankful Thursday : Work

So, did you notice?  That big blank space on the calendar last week?  Yep, that was me, completely forgetting about last week’s Thankful Thursday.  In fact, I was so busy last week that I didn’t think about it at all until very late on Thursday night, and I still had so much on my plate that I just couldn’t get it done. My apologies.

However, that brings me to what I’m thankful for this week : work.  Clients.  Projects.  I’m so thankful for each of you that have trusted me to translate your events and stories into paper realities.  I truly enjoy the variety of requests that you bring my way.  Keeps me challenged, and exercising my design muscles.  :)  Last week, I was working on a travel-themed Save the Date, a tropical cocktail party invitation, a sympathy card (a first for me) and some personal stationery.  I LOVE the variety!

Quad Deuce Design Thankful Thursday Work

I know in this economy, even though it is slowly getting better, it is still a gift to have a job, even a meager one.  To be able to do what I love for a living, well, I’m blessed so far beyond what I deserve.  I do not take this career for granted.  Nor do I take any client for granted.  It is because of them, because of you, that I am so blessed.  Thank you!

Thankful Thursday : Starting Fresh

20121205-211632.jpg

Greetings to you all on this fine Thursday! The first Thursday of the new year, as a matter of fact. This week I’ve been reflecting on the many happenings of 2012, both business and personal, and I’m overwhelmed with hope for 2013. Have you ever felt like you’re standing on the edge of something really great, and all you’ve got to do is step over the line? Well, for me, crossing the line was turning the calendar page on January 1st. I know in the grand scheme of things it’s a small action, but for me it holds major significance. A fresh start. A blank slate. Moving forward, and forward only.

Last year took its toll on me. Never in my life have I faced more challenges and tough decisions than in the last 12 months. Not everything went according to plan, but the lessons learned and the progress made, I feel, were worth every ounce of the struggle. I am closer to my Lord than I have ever been. Every day I am aware of His presence both in me and in the world around me, and it is my desire to know and see and glorify Him more. I am confident and defined in who I am as a person. I can easily tell you the values I hold most dear, and why. I am much more in tune with what (and how much) I am and am not capable of doing, and am at peace with that meeting point.

Today I am thankful for new beginnings. Thankful for drawing the line in the sand, taking the lessons learned, crossing the line and never going back. I’m really looking forward to 2013! There are great things ahead, and I’d love nothing more than for us to share this journey!

And simply for your viewing pleasure, a sunrise, as seen from my back door a couple weeks ago. Aren’t fresh starts beautiful?

Stationery Academy… or Bust!

I’m so excited right now I’m busting at the seams!!

I am officially registered for the Stationery Academy!!

For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, the Academy is THE workshop for professional stationery designers.  It’s all about the business and branding issues faced specifically by those in the invitation & stationery industries.  The founders, Whitney English Kolb and Emily Ley, have years of successful experience and well-established brands for their respective companies.  And I’m so thankful they’re willing to pass that knowledge along to business newbies like me!  (I’m not new to design, but definitely new to running a business.)

I want to participate in this conference, first and foremost, for the benefit of my clients.  I’m committed to giving you the most creative, quality product & service possible.  And the more confident I am in my design and business skills, the better I can serve you!

I also want to be a part of the Stationery Academy because somewhere deep down in my gut, I know I’m supposed to give all this back.  God has been so incredibly good to me, so very, very far beyond what I deserve.  I know this is the path for me because He’s opened doors for me all along the way.  There’s no doubt in my mind that this is what I’m meant to do.  And I know there will come a time when I’ll be called to pay it forward.  I don’t know when, where or how that will be, but I’m going to do my best to be prepared for that time.  I want to be the best I can be so that I can help someone else be the best that they can be.

So for now, I’m SUPER excited to hear these speakers!  I think there will be more, but these are the three featured on the Academy’s page at the moment (info pulled from the Academy’s website):

Whitney English Kolb - At age 15, Whitney English Kolb began a life-long love affair with paper and interior design at a stationery and gift store in her hometown of Oklahoma City. The two passions, combined with her love of antique prints and textiles, fused in 2002 to create a unique marketplace niche for Whitney English, LLC.

The company was founded with baby-sitting money and elbow grease, so it makes a good story. Whitney’s parents, family, and friends all chipped in at one time or another, either by talking her through financials or folding note cards, so if you ask, she never takes all the credit and firmly believes in both verbal and written (of course) gratitude.

Natalie Chang – We are thrilled to bring Natalie on as a keynote speaker and host this year! Natalie has over sixteen years of experience working in the stationery industry. From the licensing and marketing department of Mary Englebreit, to operations and design for imprintable company Julia D. Azar, Natalie’s stationery experience is immense. Currently she consults with Lifeguard Press, coordinating the Lilly Pulitzer and Jonathan Adler brands, and does incredible high-end custom design work from Memphis, Tennessee under the Natalie Chang brand!

Amber Housley - As a west coast gal (born and raised) who moved to the South five years ago, Amber now claims the South as “home”. After marrying her charming husband in a southern plantation wedding that kicked off a new love of event planning and design, she soon set out to become a super-mom to their son.

In the South, Amber’s love for decorating the porch is encouraged and a ice cold glass of sweet tea makes any day better. When not scouring for treasures at flea markets and local artisans, Amber can be found putting the finishing touches on her latest project. She shares, “I’ve adapted to living this life in a richer way by making every moment and sweet detail count. I look forward to sharing all the joy, beauty and inspiration I’ve found here with you.”

I’ve got my notebook & pen ready, my heart set on big things, and my brain is a giant sponge.  SO excited that things worked out so I’m able to attend!  I thought for sure I’d  have to wait another year, but like I mentioned, God is opening doors for me.  Can’t wait to share with  you what I learn! (And with any luck this pasty white skin won’t burn in the July Pensacola sun!)

Running a Business (and Earning Gray Hair)

I knew when I launched Quad Deuce Design that there would come a time when life as I know it and life as I want it would collide.  Well, I have officially arrived at that point.  The occupation I’m trying to leave and the business I’m trying to build are butting heads like two wild rams on a Discovery Channel documentary.  Like two atoms hurtling through space destined for spontaneous combustion.  I never IMAGINED I would be as busy as I was last month!!!  New clients started calling, previous clients placed new orders, the day job (yes, I still work a day job, for now) was slammed, and on top of that my husband and I are moving next week to a house that needed quite a bit of sprucing.

Yes, it is indeed possible to have too much of a good thing!  Why there aren’t 8 days in a week I have yet to understand.  I am SO THANKFUL for all the incoming design work, truly grateful for new industry friends and contacts, and über-excited about moving to a “new” and bigger place (and finally getting to use all those HGTV tips I’ve absorbed), but I wasn’t quite prepared for all of it at once.  Yes, underneath this mess of dyed red hair is quite a bit of gray, and I’m pretty sure that my post-April 2012 head is a lighter shade than the pre-April one.

But, that being said, I’ve never been more excited in my life!  Design and paper are truly the passions of my heart, and to be building a business where I get to share those passions with you every day absolutely thrills my soul.  Even though I have some small-business experience and a formal education in art & entrepreneurship, I’m definitely learning as I go.  I’m fine-tuning my design & production workflow, and steadily improving my branding, marketing, accounting, legal stuff, etc.  But I love it all so much!  This is not a hobby for me.  Not a side gig.  This is truly what I’m built for.  And it’s only the beginning…

AH Inspired Workshop Recap

I cannot adequately express to you how excited I am about the AH Inspired workshop I attended last Saturday!  Myself and 18 other budding and established creative women entrepreneurs gathered in downtown Nashville to soak in the knowledge, advice and inspiration given by five fabulous & successful women:

Amber Housley : Wedding Stylist, Stationery Designer, Entrepreneur Extraordinaire

Kelle Boyd : Textile & Stationery Designer, Licensing Wizard

Sara Rose : Photographer, Fountain of Encouragement

Jessica Bishop : Blogger, Stylist, Budget Queen

Courtney Dial (soon to be Whitmore) : Blogger, Author, Social Media Maven

There wasn’t a single topic covered that I didn’t benefit from.  They discussed facing our fears, marketing and branding tips, balancing our work and home life, social media strategies, public relations pointers and many other things they wish they had known in the beginning.  I was particularly inspired by each of their personal journeys.  I’m so thankful Amber provided us with these awesome notebooks so I could take (furiously scribbled) notes!  (I love the quote on the front!)

At the end of the day I felt reassured that Quad Deuce Design is off to a great start.  I am now armed with the right knowledge to take this design studio to the next level.  But most importantly, I left the building with a new network of friends, fellow creative entrepreneurs, all of us with gigantic dreams.

I decided to start living the life I always imagined.  I am turning my can’ts into cans, and my dreams into plans.  I took the leap, and I’m growing my wings on the way down.
